Slaugham Archives is a site concentrating on “cheap work” by commercial photographers in the late 19th, early 20th centuries produced to reach a new market – those who couldn’t afford the traditional family album stuffed with cartes de visite and cabinet photos. Many of these products are small in size, were quick and simple to produce and portrayed people who had never before been photographed. The site makes an attempt to name and describe the different formats encountered across the UK, some of which are regularly dismissed as the products of modern photobooths. Subjects covered include tintypes, gems, Victorias, midgets, stamp photos, stickybacks and many more oddities.
